Detaching from Mental Limitations - Saturday, March 7th, 2015 4:08 am

In my time as a teacher and coach, I have encountered countless athletes consumed in the acquisition of skill and knowledge, but quickly become frustrated because they still can’t get where they want to be with their performance. This is because they spend little or no time dealing with what may be blocking their best. These blocks are your mental limitations – when you seem to have the knowledge, but can’t find that “winning feeling” for yourself.

Have you ever noticed how you may intellectually understand why someone is so good, but can’t get there yourself? Either you can’t or don’t want to. If you don’t want to, no problem, but if you do, let’s look at what the problem is.

Imagine your favourite athlete in your chosen sport. Now, what do they have that you don’t have? It doesn’t take long to realize whatever physical gap is present can be made up with time, acquiring the skill and knowledge. Great information and the people that teach it are available if you are willing to do the research. But your learning or performing can quickly become compromised if you become mentally tied up by issues such as pressure, fear, distractions, uncontrolled thoughts, nerves and self-doubt. Anyone that says they have never been affected by their own mental limitations, hasn’t or won’t look – and usually replace what is missing by manufacturing confidence, otherwise known as ego, another block. These psychological issues are real and deserve as much self-study as the acquisition of skill. Quite simply, all your developed ability can become useless without a balanced, focused and unaffected mind.

Kelee Meditation is a way to bring your mind into balance and focus – and detach from mental blocks within. As your perception opens, look into the difference between your doing and being nature – between your brain’s ability to learn patterns of movement (skills), analyse and remember information (knowledge) and your mind’s ability to experience and understand for yourself (wisdom). If elite performance is what you want, learn to research what you want outside and what you feel inside! Very soon, your blocks will become your lessons. After all, why you would place mental limitations upon yourself? There can’t be a good answer can there?
